AWS now offers Reserved Instances for R8i and M8i instance classes on Amazon RDS for Oracle, giving teams running Oracle workloads a path to up to 53% savings over On-Demand pricing.

AWS added Reserved Instance pricing for R8i and M8i on Amazon RDS for Oracle on July 31. Teams can now commit to one- or three-year terms and receive up to 53% savings compared to On-Demand prices. The option is available in all AWS regions where those instance types are offered, except the South America (São Paulo) Region.

What R8i and M8i Actually Are

Both instance classes are powered by custom Intel Xeon 6 processors available only on AWS. AWS says they deliver up to 15% better price-performance and 2.5x more memory bandwidth compared to previous-generation Intel-based instances.

The Reserved Instance option is what is new here. Teams that migrated to R8i or M8i and kept running On-Demand now have a concrete cost reduction available without changing anything about how the database runs.

How the Reservation Mechanics Work

Reserved Instances on RDS for Oracle come in three payment structures: All Upfront, Partial Upfront, and No Upfront. All Upfront offers the highest discount; AWS pricing documentation shows No Upfront offers up to 30% while All Upfront reaches up to 63%, making No Upfront the smallest discount of the three. All Upfront and Partial Upfront can be purchased for one- or three-year terms. No Upfront is only available for a one-year term.

AWS describes the three options as a way to balance the amount you pay upfront with your effective hourly price.

One detail that matters for active workloads: Reserved Instance benefits apply to both Multi-AZ and Single-AZ configurations. AWS states that customers can move freely between configurations within the same database instance class type.

Size flexibility adds another degree of freedom, but only under one licensing model. Reserved Instances provide size flexibility for the Oracle database engine under the Bring Your Own License (BYOL) model. With size flexibility, the discounted rate automatically applies to any size within the same instance family.

For example, if you reserve one instance size under BYOL and later split the workload across smaller instances in the same family, the discount applies to that usage without a new reservation — consistent with how AWS describes size flexibility generally.

Size flexibility does not apply to the License Included (LI) edition of Oracle. That distinction affects how much flexibility you actually get from the commitment, so confirm your licensing model before purchasing.

What to Check Before Committing

Cloud platform owners and application teams running Oracle on RDS should work through four questions before buying.

Which licensing model are you on? BYOL and License Included behave differently under Reserved Instances. BYOL gives you size flexibility; License Included does not. If you are on License Included and expect to resize within the year, a reservation locks you tighter than you may want.

Which Oracle edition and version do you run? DB instance class support for Oracle varies by Oracle Database version and edition. Confirm your specific version qualifies for R8i or M8i before reserving. The Amazon RDS user guide has the full compatibility table.

Is your workload steady-state? AWS describes Reserved Instances as a great option for the steady state use case, noting that most production applications require database servers available 24×7. A database that frequently scales up and down, or one that supports a project with a defined end date, may generate less savings than the headline discount implies.

AWS pricing documentation notes that when you purchase a Reserved Instance, you are billed for every hour during the entire Reserved Instance term you select, regardless of whether the instance is running. That makes workload stability the key variable in calculating actual savings.

Are you in São Paulo? The South America (São Paulo) Region is excluded from this offering. Teams with databases in that region are not eligible under this offering.

If R8i or M8i instances are already running On-Demand in your account, the starting point is straightforward. Pull the last 30 to 90 days of RDS instance-hour spend. Isolate R8i and M8i usage. Then run the comparison against the one-year and three-year Reserved prices on the Amazon RDS for Oracle pricing page.
